Hey everyone-
Is Nuke still the only comping app still able to “see” and use all of
the arbitrary channels that you can bake into an EXR file?I know Shake can see some of them, and so can Fusion, but it seems
to me that Nuke is the only one truly able to take full advantage of
an EXR file.Any thoughts or info from anyone about this?
Thanks!

Possible the best workflow is using Nuke, but I believe is possible to load arbitrary channels if these channels is exported as other channels. ex-normal passes as rgb passes or other available channel in the software
July 14, 2006 at 4:07 pm #213732Dave DocimoParticipantThanks to you both!
I did get Fusion to accept the other channels, but couldn’t figure out the
channel booleans thing-y.I hunted it down on some site, followed the directions, but couldn’t get
the results I expected, which is the reason for the original email.
I saw some of the files, but not all of them, and not in any intuitive way.Do you have a particular way you do it in Fusion?
Do either of you have any thoughts on the pros/cons of using EXR
over other formats, and just rendering to seperate files?Seems like, even though file size will be large (and testing time renders
might be longer) the advantages you get by going with everything in one
file are greater than the disadvantages.Any thoughts?
Thanks again.

Incidence (for wrap-lighting look)
reflections
Specular
Specific channels for each light contribution, so I can mix, match and color the
lights seperately.July 14, 2006 at 5:09 pm #213730Dave DocimoParticipantdansturm23 wrote:i would try adding a channel booleans opperator for each channel you would like to create as a seperate layer (so 4 in this case?) and in the color channels tab, set To Red to your desired channel and repeat for green and blue. This should give you an RGB version of that channel as its own node which can then be used as a source clip.OK, thanks. I’ll give that a try.
I appreciate the help.

Yeah, I can send you a frame to use. I’ll upload it later today. I am running out now.
BTW, the Channel Booleans worked, thanks for the description!
It wasn’t ituitive, or perfect, but at least I saw what I wanted to see.
Thanks again!Perry
July 15, 2006 at 2:59 pm #213722AdamParticipantim going to do a whole lesson plan on the channel booleans. expect a video for it in 4 weeks.
there are lots of powerful things in that node and the combination of that node.
(especially in keying situations)

and thanks much for the upload. I want to make sure the developers arent getting to much rest. 😉

No one in CG gets much rest!
And computers are supposed to make our lives easier, huh?July 15, 2006 at 4:13 pm #213721AdamParticipantever think about what you would be doing if not this?
Id either be a chef or a comedian.

July 15, 2006 at 5:34 pm #213728Dave DocimoParticipantI think I would be a magician, since they both about fooling the eye.
I probably would work less hours, but tragically end up locked in
some box, with a half on and half off straight jacket, and my ankles still
chained to the box.Hmmmm…. Maybe a life in VFX isn’t so hard after all!

July 16, 2006 at 12:50 pm #213727Dave DocimoParticipantHey netviper-
I had a render problem last night. Sorry I couldn’t send the image file.
I am re-rendering now, and crossing my fingers it all works OK.
I will upload if it turns out cool.
BTW, love your training vids. I watched some on-line a while back and
just saw a few new ones last night, while waiting for the ill-fated render.Nice work!

OK, here is a link to the fil(s):

Well, I didn’t get the render sorted out, but it might be user error
and lack of Fusion experience more than the file’s having problems.
Take a look at these files (lots of extra XSI-spit-out files for you, too).I didn’t want to let you hang on any longer, so I figured I would
upload them for you to look at anyway.See what you can do with them, and let me know how it goes.
