Paint

Im having a little fight with the paint node and am wondering perhaps if im going mad.
I am unable to paint a stroke! I can see my cursor, pick a brush, resize it, select a color. but if i press down on the viewer no ink comes out!!!! Tried with alpha on and off and painting on the alpha…. nothing.

I had a breakthrough once by simply throwing away my player and making a new one, then it would work so thinking perhaps my player was set to display incorrectly. However nothing seems to be amiss in there, its set to look at the tool output.
Im am a beginner so quite possible im doing something stupid….

any ideas?
