I know quadro graphic boards can be speedy if you work with 3ds max, I use it at work and it is awesome. but since I’m planning to upgrade my machine at home I’m wondering if it make sense to invest in a quadro or may be a top of the line geforce (like the GTX480), since the diference are mostly on the drivers, I would like to know if it would make diference also on Fusion and the upcoming After Effects CS5. Adobe says it will suport the cheaper geforces, but it doesn’t make any specific coments about speed, they only mention that their tests were done on quadros.
Since the software are based on openGL, openCL and Cuda and not on specific drivers like maxtreme, one would assume that the speed should mach, right? I will probably spend more than half of my time on compositing software and photoshop rater than 3ds max and I really don’t want to expend an extra $1000 just to have some speed gains in Max but I would put this money down if it really speeds up everything else.have anybody done test comparing quadro and geforce on Fusion, AE photoshop or even Nuke?
I think this subject would be of interest of lots of artists.thanks,

Encore HollywoodApril 21, 2010 at 5:00 pm #218947Tan thanh tan thanhParticipantI’ve used both quadros and GF cards w/Maya, AE, Pshop and Nuke. For the most part the difference is minimal at best. Also, I’d go w/the cheaper 470 versus the 480. On multiple sites they’ve run both through various tests against each other and a couple ATI cards. So far it seems the 480 isn’t worth the extra cost. That may or may not change once the drivers mature or more apps take advantage of the Fermi-goodness.

Since most artists don’t really spend all the time on a 3d app, there is allways, texture, comp, etc. I beliaeve it doesn’t make any sense to invest extra 1500 or more on a quadro, you need to really use heavy 3d files to justify it. My only other doubt would be about all the new GPU renderings coming out this year like IRay, VrayRT, etc, would they get much faster on the quadros or a GeForce should do it? Anybody else have done tess with those?Thanks again for your feedback.
