I am unable to import any quicktimes since upgrading to qt 7. Is there a fix to allow qt 7 files to be imported into flame w/o having to render a sequence?
    Thanks in advance.

Rummor has it Discreet is waiting for an SGI patch. Not sure why this isn’t fixed yet.

I have heard of no QT workaround other than downgrading to v6. (qt)

Just a reminder, keep watching out for Creative Technology’s wiretap i/o software…..its great to think of file i/o as a thing of the past!

I’m sure everyone is probably pretty tired of hearing me hype this stuff up so much with still no public release, so, I’ll shutup for now until everyone in my camp can finally decide we’re ready for the first release.

XStoner is pretty good for this as well, though they haven’t updated it yet for the 64-bit IFF releases.

And, to get into xstoner, you’re talking WAY MORE money than Creative Technology will…. and I do mean 10’s of thousands more….

10’s of thousands? In what universe? You’re talking a few thousand for the whole setup if you’re only going to use it for I/O. Get a quote before you make ridiculous assertions like that. Maybe you were thinking of their other product Sledgehammer?

Xstoner’s cluncky interface hasn’t been upgraded in 2 years.

Well, that’s a real grown-up comment. What praytell do you propose as an alternative? There isn’t anything on the market that can do what Xstoner does right now, and it works great for us. Creative Technology’s wiretap software is vapourware, in my opinion, until it is actually released.

Well, yeah, if you say so Daddy! Xstoner is a great idea as stone&wire sometimes isn’t an option. It’s just annoying that there’s such a difference between the pc and mac interface and that Xscommander is so basic and only works on a pc and it’s not integrated into Xstoner itself. It seems to me that all the features are there, but they could benefit from being put into one sleek application. As always, if there’s no real alternative or competition to a product there’s oftne little motivation for developing it.

You won’t get ANY arguments from me about XStoner’s interface issues, but once you learn it it’s very easy, and it’s the only game in town right now. Especially if you have to move clips to/from the stone in order to use them in other apps. Although file output from smoke just got alot easier with it’s new integration with cleanerXL. I can’t even begin to tell you how easy it is to export Quicktimes, AVIs, DVD-video, etc now.

Dawg. I’m not looking for an argument. I use Xstoner every day.

After upgrading to Tiger and QT7, QT exports out of mac, encoded as DV-PAL, Apple UC 8-bit ot BlackMagic 8-bit don’t import into Smoke 7/Flame 9. This has been raised at the Discreet forum as well. And there seems no solution in sight.

The problem is probably Apple has made changes to the structure of QuickTime that Autodesk/SGI need to accomodate. Maybe, just maybe.

Running the QT 6.5 re-installer is a workaround for anyone who isn’t using FCP 5 in Tiger which “prefers” to have QT7.

Another workaround for Blackmagic-FCP setups is to use FrameLink that ships free with Blackmagic 5 drivers. This utility “instantly” converts any Quickltime 8-bit or 10-bit SD or HD into a mountable and share-able “drive” containing a .dpx frame sequence. These can be copied over NFS into Smoke/Flame. And these import correctly into Smoke/Flame.

Framelink also works the other way around to convert .dpx sequences into Quicktime.

Kona also has a similar utility but I’m not conversant with it.

DV_PAL encoded Quicktimes never worked in smoke or flame, regardless of the version of Quicktime used to encode them. You need to be encoding using the Uncompressed or Animation codec. I don’t know about the Mac version of Quicktime 7, but I encode Uncompressed, and Animation codec movies out of Quicktime 7 for WindowsXP all the time, and they import flawlessly into smoke 7 Tezro.

    This is not true.
At our facility, we routinely exported Quicktime as DV-PAL (for edit reference only) from FCP 4.5 (QT6.5) and Avid MC 11 (QT 5) for import into Smoke 6 till smoke ver 6.7 and QT 7 came along and spoilt the party.

We have also successfully sent QT as UC 8-bit or BM 8-bit into Smoke/Flame. But not 10-bit anything.

You might have used Smoke before ver. 6 or QT before ver. 5 on an older (OS9) Mac or something.
