Hello everyone!
Could any good soul give me a quick tip on how to edit with a least possible trouble Red One footage?
I’m a few days before test shots to a movie and for some reasons we will have have two days after shooting and before showing edited material to our producer. The point is, that I would love to shoot on Red One, but I don’t have time to go through usual process of converting raw files to Avid or FCP.
Can Red One record to something which can be natively read by FCP or Avid (in hd for example)? Can I wrap its files with quicktime without converting anything to be used in common edit apps? What frame size should we choose? This is not particularly good situation as I’ve never worked on reds…, but this is how it is this time. Can we bake color setup on set or these files must be logarithmic and they *have* to be corrected in post? (which we don’t need to in our case).
thanks in advance!
skk.(I need red, because Cinealta setup doesn’t fit to our stady cam – among other reasons).

You can edit the so called QuickTime wrappers natively in FCP. I don’t know how many shots you will have, but two days is really tight if you’re a newbie in RED.
I would strongly recommend you to download some example footage from the net (there are pretty much around) and do some tests with FCP, before doing anything. Or just hire someone who knows what to do.You will need to install a QT codec and REDalert as well. You might want to visit http://www.reduser.net as well.
Hope this’ll be a good starting point for you.

i can only recommend you rent a RED Rocket card somewhere and convert the files to either ProRes oder Avid DNxHD MXF´s. You will do yourself a huge favour. DO NOT try to use the quicktime ref proxies in FCP, it will not work as you think it will.
The Red Rocket will convert the footage in realtime, so the no-time argument is invalid 😉
good luck!

cheers!

Premiere Pro CS5 handles RED R3D on the timeline…no converting…all the RAW demosaic controls accessible in the software…half, quarter, eighth res decode for faster response during cutting…
I just thought I’d offer that. It seems there is a lot of “work” and not much “flow” in some of the pipelines I see explained with RED footage and various applications.
So…it’s a thought.

Therefore lots more processing power needed. Converting to ProRes is ideal is you have a RED Rocket and not thought that you could acquire without discretion.

We do it all the time, both commercial and long form and it’s very manageable. Hell, I edit with M proxies on a MacBook Pro on set when we have the need.
Avid Media Composer 5 with AMA can edit the R3D clips directly with no proxies needed and works incredibly well, even on my much slower 4core PC.
If you only showing the test shots after those two days, I would be very confident with either FCP and proxies or direct in Avid.
