I’m kind of shooting myself in the foot by asking (as I am sure its one of those, “hey dude, this is so basic …you should know this one by now”) however, here it goes:

The CG artists have been rendering separate passes… Occ, Reflecs,Beauty, Spec., etc. cool …great! However I was wondering how common it is to render out a separate ‘shadow passes’? They just include the shadow info in the Beauty.

First, I’m not in a “major Post House” so its not entirely necessary, but then again it makes it harder to tweak the shadows separate. Can someone shed some light on the protocol within the major studios with rendering a separate shadow pass and how relevant this may be? Does this limit the way you can fully tweak the shadows? Or, Is there another way around this?

    Thanks for the light!
