It was pretty interesting to watch the latest ep with Siggy and the Resolve from NAB. I was really surprised to find that the Resolve was tapping out on only 20 layers of 4k in Real-time. Filmlight had the pleasure of showing the upcoming release of our GPU tech and on a Baselight8. Paul R. and I stopped adding layers after almost 40 because we got sick of adding them. Needless to say they were all real-time and in full ap, which I guess makes the processing of Resolve not only paralleled, but greatly surpassed. In fact, since the Baselight8 has the disk bandwidth to play 2 streams of 4k in realtime at the same time as writing a 3rd stream to disk, this means that a Baselight8 can grade say 20 layers on two different sources dissolving over each other in realtime… so double the performance of a Resolve and three time the disk bandwidth.

I’m sure over time as DaVinci get to round 2 of their new technology, they’ll get a little higher up there in performance. Interestingly enough, the 20 layers is a little closer to Filmlight’s mid range product a Baselight4.

All in the interest of correct information, Mike.

    Best,
    Chris

I thought it was quite amusing that I saw that Resolve performance quote in several places around the net, whereas FilmLight kept fairly quiet, just kinda “4k? Yeah… we already do that” 🙂
