    hi there,

i´m thinking of getting some specialized software for rotoscoping in our pipeline, as it becomes a bigger part of our work from project to project. when i researched on that i came across motor and silhouette – of course. being a monet user i gave motor the first try. now i saw pretty interessting features in silhoutte (i.e. planar tracking, stereo support). i haven´t used both of them in a real world sittuation yet. so wanted to ask, if someone would share her/his experience with me.

    thx in advance

    G’day,

We have used Silhouette on a couple of jobs that required lots of roto – one was crowd replication using a bunch of shot plates and it held up pretty well. The ability to select multiple points and transform them independently of the rest of the shape was pretty helpful.

At the time the tracker was not so great but this was a while ago so i can’t comment on the current version. We also had a problem with scripts being node locked to the machine they were done on so we could only render on that machine. Again this was a while ago so may have been changed in more recent versions.

I haven’t used motor as extensively but can say that it has an awesome planar tracker.

silhouette has the best tools for manual rotoscoping. it’s a big time saver over the clunky tools in comp apps. I love that it exports real shape data to all of the major comp apps and has a lot of tools for using trackers to assist the process.

it’s point tracker is fine – I find it easy to get good results – would rank it better than shake but not as good as 3de or flame.

the planar tracker is not as developed as motor, but planar tracking is really mostly a gimmick that’s not as usable in production as a good 3d tracker exporting tracking data that can be used to stabilize plates. in a way, you can still do planar like tracking, but you have many more options available to you with that pipeline, it’s generally a much quicker means to an end.

silhouette’s stereo support is excellent. if you are doing stereo roto or paint work, it’s pretty much a no brainer addition.

I feel silhouette is more valuable than motor because of the manual tools. it depends on what you’re doing, but typically automated methods break down quickly for most live action work. manual tools should be the highest priority, everything else is just marketing hype and/or icing.

definitely give them both a try, but that’s my take on it
