I dont know. I think Scrath is a DI Solution, to compete with Autodesk Lustre.

A real Comp solution will be release. I hope………

Yes it is a DI machine – DI and workflow – i will try and post more about it soon

Hey guys I’m a scratch colorist in New York. I’ve heard from pretty reliable sources that we will be seeing a more robust compositing solution from scratch soon. How soon is soon mmmmm maybe by the fall…..just a guess 😉

I had the chance of enjoy 5D Cyborg and its tools rock. Totally!!
. . Scratch has a powerful DI manager, I don’t know if they can put inside all the tools that have flame (for example).
    BTW, What’s about SGO’s Mistika? http://www.sgo.es

well a combination of red camera, scratch and a flame would be sweet i guess…ive tried both scratch and lustre [ not lustre 2007] and scratch rocks… would be cooler if discreet had a tie-up with RED in some way, to facilitate integration with the redcams images and flame/inferno…but thats seems very unlikely ..sigh

    Scratch to all !!!!
I used Cyborg for many years, and was always blown away by it’s solidness and versatility.
I was doing DI work on it 6 years ago when DI did not even a have name!!!! I worked at a facility (estudios mega) where until I left I did over 40 features on Cyborg being them HD or 2k. When Cyborg whent down my heart sunk for a moment, but thats life.
The point of this is to say that I know the boys at Assimilate pretty well and the guy who writes scratch Gerk (dutch men) told me that Scratch will do everything Cyborg did and more. The problem is that only he writes it so that means it is a very slow process.
But one thing is for sure between Luster and Scratch I’d go scratch any day of the week one costs US 600.000 and the other 60.000 and Cluster still can’t play real time 2k some thing that cyborg/scratch has been doing since the year 2000!!!!!!!!

Hey, looks like you’re an enthusiast!
I really like Scratch, it’s an app with a great future because it integrates workflow. I was there in the 5D days too and there was another product, called Colossus, for the DI stuff. It was able to play 2K in realtime at this time from native DPX/CIN files, as opposed to Cyborg that had to rely on proprietary partitioning and import/export of files, and it’s still possible even if it’s now named Lustre ;-). You need to update your numbers too, because if you want to have a Scratch system that does what a Lustre do, it will be maybe 25-30% cheaper but not a tenth. And then remember that in film environment the cost of the grading system is just a part of the whole investment, for example the digital projector can cost as much. If it’s for indie stuff it’s not the same story.

It really was a shame that 5D (now speed six) went down!!! The way I herd it was that there was an auction in England to pay off the debt and that Discreet bought parts of the software, and that one of them was colossus. To bad it would have been a great fight.
As to what I wrote: we bought the scratch software for US 60.000. We ordered from Global storage a system with 12 terabytes all of the disks being hot swaps even the “c” drive for another US 50.000. Monitor wise I was using a Panasonic projector (pretty bad one) but the Sony 4k was not yet available for sale at the time. Now it is on it’s way down. And I must say that it is amazing wish I could have one at home. As for Luster the sales rep would come to the facility every week trying to sell it to us, but the best price he could get to was
US 585.000 and that is the USA price so we still have to put at least 20% on top of that just to get it in to the country!!!!!! So we went with scratch and most clients still prefer it over luster. At the end of the day it all comes down to the money, and owners always (if possible) prefer the cheaper solution.

Well, that’s the price of an Incinerator, not a Lustre, compare apples with apples or maybe it’s just your AD rep can’t read a pricelist!
Anyway Scratch is a great solution and it’s more the people than the machine (when they work 😉 ) that count in that highly subjective business that colour grading is 😉

There’s a lot of talk from Red at this point that they are going to be releasing an API within the next few months. Given that they are also rewriting the firware into some amazing new version that will invalidate all shooting techniques currently use while shooting with a Red1, it’s going to be interesting to see how it’s received.

Regardless, once Red actually manages to release an API and now that the exclusivity agreements are done, I think there will be a ton of manufacturers looking to add their own Red support.

Personally, I’m not exactly blown away by the image quality of the Red, nor by the immense hype surrounding it. There are better digital cinema cameras out there that don’t exhibit the same issues in workflow and image quality that the Red does. I know the concept is to place good tools in the hands of everyone but when the workflow just isn’t there for professional finnishing in a costly manner, the argument for a cheap mid-performance camera just goes out the window.

    Best,
    Chris
