Hey hey, I’m doing a research assignment on post-production technology and I’m just wondering what you guys all think about the Tezro workstation from SGI.
Thanks

The reason SGI is falling into the abyss is because they are stuck on mid nineties technology. Now they are becoming another computer assembler. The Tzero is the clearance sale of their unsold Onyx 3900. Although they are quite powerful it has no future. SGI is moving to Intel, ATI and Linux so this machine with MIPS, IR Graphics and Irix is like betting on a horse with a broken leg. Tzero is an old machine with a huge price that reminds me of the characters in 100 Years of Solitude, and remember that families condemmed to 100 years of solitude don’t have a second oportunity on earth.

But if we come to onyx4, I don’t think there are too many options in PC, which will support that many processors in one computer. I think the Cray technology is an invaluable information for SGI.
I repeat, Tezro can only be sold, because it can run some very expensive softwares, which are only available on IRIX platform. Other than that, Tezro is only comparable to a US$1k PC! 🙄
