The universal version of Shake was released today with a new pricing structure. Its new price is $499 — pretty incredible.

June 20, 2006 at 2:09 pm #213510maxxParticipantAnyone know if the Linux pricing has changed?
Ahh – from the FAQ:
s Shake still available on Linux?
Yes, Shake 4.1 for Linux is available through [email protected]. Pricing has not changed for Linux.
Can you say loss leader? Of course it probably will work, once the workstations are out and can dual / triple boot I’ll probably get one.

New Mac OS X seats can now be purchased via the Retail box for a modest
price of $499 with unlimited render licenses. Shake 4.1 Linux licenses
remain available directly through .Apple will no longer be selling maintenance for Shake and no further
software updates are planned as we begin work on the next generation of
Shake compositing software. While we’re excited about the innovations we can
bring in the future, we understand you have a business to run today that
requires Shake. To that end, we will provide all Maintenance customers with
the following three options:A. Customers can continue with end-user e-mail support, as well as SDK
support for the duration of their Maintenance contract.B. Customers may elect to cancel their Maintenance and receive a pro-rated
refund for the unused portion. Existing software licenses would continue to
function according to the Software License Agreement. Maintenance customers
that wish to cancel their contract must do so by July 23, 2006.C. Additionally, Maintenance customers may choose to license the Shake 4.1
Source Code for $50,000. The Source Code license includes a 5,000 seat
volume license of Shake 4.1. This offer is designed to help facilities with
significant Shake investments maintain a reliable and controllable visual
effects pipeline. Maintenance customers that wish to license the Shake 4.1
Source Code must do so by July 23, 2006. Apple reserves the right to refuse
any maintenance customer source Code access.
so it looks like apple are working on a next generation compositing system (still shake though) but they are allowing big companies like Weta and ILM complete access to the source code so they are not inconvenienced by the transition.June 20, 2006 at 4:13 pm #213501AlesisParticipantWell they expect to release this neww app by 2008, so I guess there might be some minor upgrades.
Although it seems weird, it is no a surprise, as I recall Apple bought also Silicon Grail with nothing real. I guess the once two teams can now dedicate themselves to work on a truly next gen app for the new Quad Core Intel Macs and integrate them to Final Cut Extreme (which does exist, check out the red camera report)
on what promises to become a complete dominator on the market…BTW Shake at $500 is going to make a lot of folks switch, specially when the MacPros are released at the WWDC this august.

It’s been going downhill since version 2.5
Apple has sucked the soul out of this program and now I’m afraid it’s going to be lost forever.June 21, 2006 at 3:43 am #213508CemalParticipantfusion !!! BAH !!!!

June 21, 2006 at 12:12 pm #213515Lady Shaula SalatheParticipanti really dont know why everyone is saying bye bye shake.. because most of the post production houses are using shake for all their work, i think it will be a while before studios ditch shake as most of them have their pipelines based around shake anyways…
Cheers

Yes but I think the transition for them to convert to other software has begun, give it 2 years, my guess some will go fusion others toxic,
June 22, 2006 at 4:37 am #213509CemalParticipantInteresting how many people guess fusion and toxik will be the outcome package of choice. What about Nuke. Only one of the three that is cross platform. And best of my knowledge is the only one that has the ability to work with 64 channels and exploit openexr file format to the fullest, Works pretty darn fast pumping film rez float frames around. Works on a pretty modest machine specs as well. hahahah, yes i am biased.
cheers.
swerve.
