I’m a flame op wanting to take the leap into film. I’m interested in hearing what the general consensus is regarding the future of shake, in light of other applications (fusion, nuke) growing popularity. Which way are we headed?

Fusion is quickly becoming king – it’s appearing in the credits for every other movie that’s coming out these days. Shake is dead, although many houses may continue to use it in its current form. Nuke was just sold by D2 to The Foundry, so its future is uncertain.

Go with Fusion, you won’t be sorry.

Interesting – where abouts are you based, Zolo? Here Shake is certainly still king – if anything even more so now that it’s so cheap. It seems to me that the high end (read: places with lots of support and an R&D department) will head to Nuke while smaller places will stick with Shake unless Fusion becomes radically cheaper or the next Apple thing is reasonably feature-full. But right now it’s all a guessing game 🙂

I’m in the US. I think Fusion is more likely to be deployed in smaller high-end boutique shops where there are fewer compositors. Big film pipelines with lots of compositors working on a single project are probably still most likely to use Shake. Fusion is a lot closer to FFI in its capabilities than is Shake. Fusion is like Shake on steroids, but for a price.
