In After Effects, can you apply a shape mask directly to an effect, so as to isolate where it is distributed?

In Shake you would simply connect a noodle from the effect node to a Rotoshape.

I am told that in After Effects, in order to do something of the same nature that you have to duplicate the clip, apply the effect to the top layer, and then shape mask the portions desired to be included by the effect.

    Know what I mean?

It seems as though that if you could apply it directly to the effect, and not just the alpha of the image that it would be easier on your processor.

    Thanks.
