    Hello fxguide people,

    Audio ring-outs? Anyone?
I’m not familiar with the term and will know more in a day or two in a project pre-post meeting but wanted to see if there were any editors / finishers out there using this term. I’m guessing it’s black with tone of some sort ie. 2 secs or a frame of black with a specific level of tone but I’m not sure. Any tips appreciated.

    Thanks.

While I can’t seem to find a definition of “audio ring out” on the internet. The term as I’ve heard/used it in the past applies to when the audio of a piece (film, commercial, music video, etc.) goes past (“hangs” if you will) past the end of picture (whether the picture ends by cut or fade to black). I mostly conform commercials, so in my “world”, it’s rare to have the audio “ring out” past the duration of the commercial (:15, :30, :60) because of length restrictions.
I should also mention that I have heard the term “ring out” applied in a engineering sense, as in: “we just moved Smoke room 2, can you go ring out the room and make sure all is ok?”. I guess you could replace the term “ring out” with the word “test” in this case.

I hope this explanation is helpful. -Tom

PS. I don’t know where all the “\\\” are coming from?????

Thanks, Tom. That makes sense – audio ring-outs being just hanging audio at the end of feature film segments. Will be formatting a major film for DVD and will probably be dealing with audio and chapter stops and who knows…not sure how it needs to be handled but will find out if black video frames need to be added or if hanging audio is the case, needing fades or maybe additional formatting for mixing downstream for surround sound etc. Learn something new every day. I also heard about the audio feedback “ring-out” options audio engineers do manually and digitally to prevent live audio feedback.
