Heya mihearties!
I have been watching the Curse Of The Black Pearl DVD and i came across the issue(s) of two effects i find very attractive.
Here is the link for reference images.

Image 1)
Talking about the part Miss Swan is drowning, the medallion reveals itself and it makes some kind of strange water distortion ?
I was wondering about how i’d do it. (flame/inferno).
I’d be looking for an effect (spark) that distorts the image
water-like. Meaning ripple or something alike (any suggestions?)I’d incorporate the spark using mattes, hmm, maybe rings coming out
of the 3D medallion? rings growing from less-then-size-of-the-medallion
to full width/height of the image. Maybe I’d modify that matte to exclude
some parts of the image. After that i’d apply some camera shake, starting
just 2 or 3 frames after the spark effect starts.Image 2)
Again, water distortion. It seems to me that there is a big great
force pushing the water surface from the bottom right corner to the
top left corner of the scene. Also, i think a saw a ring like wave
moving in the same direction. After that, the water “comes back”
to its primal position, meaning, the force is gone off and water
is not pushed anymore.I’d use 3 or 4 layers of “water” and distort them, with an extended bicubic.
Also animating distortions into different directions. Like spreading out. Before that, i’d create a matte for the ring. Following surface prospective.
Also, i’v noticed a cool brightness/saturation effect just a moment before
the whole effect starts. What would be your approach to this two effects ?
redbeard-ed ass.

What you said sounds about right from what I remember. If you can’t find a canned effect that does the right kind of distortion (it was a bit like heat waves but more… watery wasn’t it?) then you can use a generic displacement Spark, Sapphire Lens will do it, or you can even use Action’s built in displacement stuff. You might not be able to get away with displacing in a single direction, so you can do it twice on two different axes (not quite the same as true 2D displacement but works). The tricky thing then is finding a displacement map 🙂 If you’re staying inside Flame you could play with particles and turbulence… probably for hours…
I remember thinking that the animation of the skeleton pirates climbing the anchor rope really sucked, it was all smooth, no physics. Johnny Depp’s hairdo more than made up for that though.
