TOXIK with a K is the next generation of discreet tools. It is set to replace FFI. It’s biggest difference is that its software driven (ffi. depends on hardware, thus using SGI machines) and platform independent. I would expect that it would be released for Linux (p4+xenon+itanium) and maybe PowerPC (aka:mac), although i am not counting on that.

As far as I know it doesn’t have a release date yet. A note to be taken is that Autodesk (owner of Discreet) is thinking about selling the company, so if that happens, everything is possible, even that it doesn’t come at all. Altough that is pure speculation

Hi all ! and a little bit more about the concept ? modular, schematics, FFI action schematic ? paint, auto-paint ? cast-shadows ? what kind of rendering ? how far 3D ? workflow ? librairies/framestores ? ouch ! i would have so many questions … can we be alpha/beta testers ? how ? … ❓

I’ve heard rumours that Discreet is going to show something new for the Windows(!) platform at this year’s SIGGRAPH. With a lot of FFIs tools in it…

So if there’s any truth to that, I’d wager that we’ll all be intoxikated after SIGGRAPH…watch out! 😉

although i didn’t see it, toxik was being demoed at NAB this year in a “whisper” suite and from what i understand, it has changed course a bit since first being introduced as a FFI replacement a few years back. It seems to be aimed at larger
houses (a la weta; sony imageworks; ilm) and is a modular system in that you can purchase all modules (paint; particles; action; keyer) or just some of them. i guess the thinking is that if there is tons of roto work to be done on spiderman 5, you can purchase ONLY the paint module for 4 months. i guess they are positioning it as a “shake killer”. There was absolutely no mention of it whatsoever at the UG mtg to my disappointment. Kinda makes you wonder what’s going to happen to combustion….

Shake killer? hardly, specially since Shake is now only U$3000 with free render licences.
I think the biggest innovation Toxik can bring is a new price strategy.
FFi is too expensive. They should think about slashing at least one zero off if they want to make it.

in feature films work, there are al lot of “desktop” platforms on Linux, Win2K or mac, but in the commercials world it is apparently a bit different.
they make much more profit if the project finaly costs a lot, or at least, is supposed to : like a percentage. if we also consider that some people only buy what is the most expensive … just to make the difference, why would discreet want to sell cheaper ? as long as they still rule on their specific market … and that they have an alternative
