Has Discreet shown Toxik/Strata/mezzo at NAB ’04?
Are there any news about it?
I have not managed to read any report about it…
Thank youMay 7, 2004 at 1:00 am #208089Diogo GirondiParticipantHaven’t been there, but I doubt, if they had shown something you probably would be hearing something about it 😉
A friend of mine was there and he haven’t told me anything about Toxic or Mezzo.
Cheers,

Probably another version of FFI and one more somoke and Fire and KPUM!
😈May 30, 2004 at 8:20 am #208094patdawgParticipantI was at NAB and went to the system user group meeting, and I remember distinctly hearing one of the discreet reps mention that Toxik technology was being incorporated into some product or other(sorry, I was paying attention to the smoke/lustre stuff) I don’t remember exactly what he said, but I do remember being surprised that Toxik was still alive. As far as Autodesk killing discreet? I don’t think so, not unless they have their heads up their butts. Find me a single effects/finishing system that performs as interactively as any of the discreet systems products, with as extensive a toolset, for a siginificantly lower price, and I’ll take my statement back. Oh wait, I already did the search before we bought our Smoke 6 HD Tezro system, and there is NOTHING.

😈Toxic is still on track, and i think you will all be hearing a great deal about it shortly… it is shaping up to be a shake killer in many ways. If anyone here CARES TO READ THE OTHER FORUMS, you’ll see toxic WAS shown at NAB and
it has NOT been killed. as far as Autodesk killing discreet…. that’s not worth
responding to….June 1, 2004 at 1:08 pm #208061joe44Participantthe only reason i wanted to move to Combustion* from AVID Illusion was
the implied promise(wishful thinking on my part) that some of what was in
the old “cyborg” suite purchased by Discreet from 5D, would emerge in Combustion*. Maybe it will happen in TOXIC.

responding to….I’ve read threads at other forums, stating that Toxik was shown, even though Discreet didn’t seem to give it a lot of attention. I’m looking forward to SIGGRAPh, though…
About the ‘Discreet-is-gonna-be-killed’ rumours…people love this particular gossip, there’s no way to get them off that track. Just ignore it. It’s like those rumours that say we never landed on the moon, or that Jonny Cash was a prisoner in St. Quentin for some evil stuff he did(I shot a man in Reno…). *sigh*
And just what makes people think that Discreet would put any of 5Ds Cyborg/Colossus assets into a desktop package like Combustion?
I mean, hey! – Cyborg v2 started at around $120.000 in the SD version, the HD package started at $210.000. Combustion is where? Around $1000? Well…June 2, 2004 at 12:01 am #208059John MontgomeryKeymasterdg wrote:Haven’t been there, but I doubt, if they had shown something you probably would be hearing something about it 😉A friend of mine was there and he haven’t told me anything about Toxic or Mezzo.
Cheers,
dgToxik indeed was shown at NAB, problem is that anyone who saw it had to (or was supposed to) sign an NDA. So they can’t talk about it publicly.
Just have to wait and see — looking forward to the Siggraph rollout….
June 3, 2004 at 12:43 am #208054AnonymousGuestHi John,

Well…Cost aside,(Discreet paid next to nothing for the 5d assets), they could have had the technology on the street in months as a Discreet Cyborg*,on a PC platform, expanded their base and kept the Cyborg people on board, for a lot less than $100,000! Combustion started at what $9,000….now it almost free! don’t get me wrong…love the package, for what it does….would be great with a little “Cyborg” added!!! know what i’m talking ’bout?

jpittsSure we’d all love to see C* a little bit ‘cyborged’, but I just can’t see this happen. You can’t leave the price tag aside when thinking about the 5D assets, and I bet that Discreet won’t do that either. Those features where designed for a high-end application, and I’m pretty sure that this is where they’ll be going to end up. Take a look at Lustre. That’s basically the old Colossus application, only now it says ‘Discreet’, not 5D. And the price tag is rather hefty…
Anyway – let’s wait and see what Siggraph has to offer…

jpittsfrom what i understand, discreet did NOT buy 5D assests wholesale. (ie Cyborg in it’s entirety) they did acquire certain technologies which will probably make their way into the product line in some form or another…
Cyborg was most notable for it’s mixed resolution workflow before flame and its agreeable pricetag. I’m not sure what else there was worth buying. some of it was a real mess.

At least that’s what I heard too.

There was a really good in-depth review of Cyborg v2 in in a german magazine (digital production) a while back, written by a long-time ffi operator, and he really seemed to like it.
June 4, 2004 at 3:45 am #208073sidewalksurfingParticipanti’m not saying the thing didn’t have potential, but there were several issues…
v2 did help with some of the problems (no archiving!) but basic workflow
issues like the “map view” which was an ineffectual schematic didn’t help…had some nice plug-ins though! javascript:emoticon(‘’)
