I’m preparing to film a sequence wherein one character has killed another and is burying their victim. I really want to have the dead character’s eyes open as dirt falls on/around their face– I feel it enhances the creepy factor. What is the best way to achieve this effect without breaking my budget?
Thank you!

1. The actor in the grave, without the dirt on top of his face.
2. A dummy the same size as the actor with a blue material where the face would be and the dirt being thrown onto this.
Combine them with some keying and roto.

Shoot one plate with the actor opening his eye, without the dirt. Then shoot the actor with is eyes closed and the dirt being thrown on top of them. Then take they eye opening from the first shot and soft matte it onto the second shot, and roto/key the dirt back on top to cover it.
This approach would be much easier to match up and would look much better if you can do it.

i was considering buying a chromakey hood and shooting two plates, one with the actor in the hood and one without.
only thing that concerns me is getting a good key…

That could help but it’s never going to be a perfect key. There is always going to be some roto and paint revealing, but I’m guessing it is only going to be for a few frames before he’s covered in dirt completely, so it should take too long.
If you can make it work without the blue the final result will look better.

the body (actor) lying wrapped to the sternum in plastic staring up at the camera which pushes in as dirt is being shoveled on with real particles of dirt landing on the actor. Super eerie IMO if I can pull it off. I’m a decent compositor but not a great 3d modeller, nor am I great with realistic particle dynamics. I’m afraid if I try to do it in post I’ll end up making the dirt on the face cheesy and completely unrealistic.
Also, apparently no one else has ever done this and revealed their techniques, because I can’t find a tutorial anywhere that demonstrates it. If you know of any, please let me know!
