When you say an image is log or linear what are the quantities that are mapped against ? pixels and intensities ?

Film response to light is better represented with a logarithmic curve, instead of the usual linear curve that compositing softwares use to work with (and do all the compositing operations). That said, when you digitalize a film into a log file format (which is usually 10 bit), you get a a better representation of the full dynamic range of light into the image, better data efficiency, and less banding than a 8bit linear image.

Thank you magnob.. but what i wanted to know was what are the values that create this log and linear curve ..I mean what is the x & y values in the graph and how is this represented in a file format ?

Han, I think the X axis represents the INPUT value of a pixel, and Y axis represents the OUTPUT value of a pixel.

In a linear colorspace (x=y) the pixel values remains unchanged.
