So this guy has ordered a new Apple MacBook ( shipping on the 15th of February). He told his boss that this would replace his old IBM desktop and it could boot Windows XP on it. To make that happen he is giving $100 of his own money and another $10,700 of donated money of his friends to the first person who can offer the instructions on how to Dual boot both operating systems – making a dual-booting Mac OS X and Windows XP happen on an Intel Mac.
At the moment the prize pool is over $10,800 and growing daily….

I don’t know this guy – I am not involved – I don’t know if its a scam – it seems real.. but judge for yourself.

From Digg and OSx86 Project, Maxxuss says he has proof that OSX can be installed anywhere and he has the patches to prove it. So it appears that MacIntel on commodity hardware won’t just be a pipe dream. Just wait until Steve hears about this. He’ll flip!”

… not really relevant, but still, quite interesting.

Have a look at the hardware and you’ll notice that the Intel-Mac has more similarities with an Mac than a PC. This starts with bios… intel-Mac use the next generation which doesn’t have much in common… the integration of an DRM modul seams to be a sign that there’s much more under the hood…
One cool thing will be running an virtual-machine on this new Macs… right now all avaible virtual machines just simulate a Intel CPU but with a little bit more time they will pass commands directly without simulation. Owning a Intel-Mac would than combine a cool operating system with compatiblity to Intel platforms… but I think we’ll have to wait a year at least to get a better performance. Have a look at simple conversion tests with Quicktime on Mac and Intel-Mac.

Also to be noted there is this from MacrumorsQuote:X86Project claims that the first versions of WINE for Intel Macs has been complied and running (screenshots). The Darwine Project has been working to port WINE to run under Mac OS X. WINE is a compatibility layer that has allowed x86 PCs to run Windows Applications under Unix/Linux operating systems. This is accomplished by re-engineering Windows system calls used by individual applications. As a result, the performance of the applications should be native as no emulation is required.

February 21, 2006 at 3:38 am #211885DekeParticipantPeople have hacked much more complex things. I’m sure people will figure out in the coming month and a half before the deadline.
The big thing holding most people back is that they we’re probably waiting for their MacBook Pro to arrive which just shipped a few days ago. Ill bet we will see something in a few weeks.
February 22, 2006 at 2:55 pm #211890eltopoParticipantI hear that the problem is the BIOS. Apple uses intel’s next gen BIOS.
Quote:Question: Can I run Windows XP on these Macs?Answer: The technical answer is . . . yes. But the practical answer is, maybe not right away.
The Apple folks aren’t encouraging it as they would rather have us use the OS X operating system that comes on the new Macs and all the Apple software designed for it.
From a technical standpoint, current versions of Windows XP use the old BIOS (basic input/output system) to boot up. These new Intel-based Macs use a newer and more efficient boot-up system called EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface).
Macs probably will be, the tech geeks say, a dual- boot system, meaning at startup you can choose between the Mac system or Windows.
Later this year, when Microsoft releases its new Vista operating system (which resembles Apple’s OS X a great deal, by the way), it will boot with the EFI system and Windows and Mac compatibility will be even easier.http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060129/BUSINESS/601290369/1003/BUSINESS
February 25, 2006 at 9:35 pm #211884DekeParticipantI read recently, I think it was from the guy who created the contest that he wishes he never started it in the first place.
Previously people would share their findings with each other and solve a problem like this pretty fast. Since everyone wants to win that 12,000, no one is sharing because that might give someone the leg up and win the contest. So it might take a little longer for a solution since people aren’t working together as much.
March 16, 2006 at 7:57 am #211881Escargot_vbParticipantI think somebody has finally succeded. 😆

http://www.engadget.com/2006/03/15/xp-on-mactel-the-movieIt’s not even the end of march and someone already did it. Bah to all those naysayer articles. I swear the media’s only job these days is to write about all the bad shit because it gets a rise out of people.
March 18, 2006 at 3:43 pm #211889eltopoParticipantThis can actually be a real deal breaker for Apple. A close friend of mine wants to change his computer. He wants a mac but he uses Softimage so that was always an obstacle. After he heard the news he is considering the switch a lot more.
I guess this can be the case for a lot of people.

So for you guys and gals a question,
So if you have a Mac what windows aonly program would you like to run?April 5, 2006 at 5:37 pm #211886XavierParticipanteltopo wrote:Wow! I guess the virtualization gossip was true after all.So for you guys and gals a question,
