    John And Mike,

I’ve just listened to the Disney podcast and all I can say is…WOW!!

I never realised you put so much work into a super! 😯 I now realise I’ve been shortchanging my clients by simply undertaking the default 100% white 0% black supers with Hermite fade-ups.

I’m now begining to understand what seperates the truely great from the also-rans 😆

that kind of makes it sound like that Demo’s like that are somehow unique to Discreet, most unfair IMO. Every product demo is obviously designed to show the strengths that it has and to skirt over the weak areas. The real skill that experience of attending demo’s should get you is the ability to notice what ISN’T said and to find out afterwards WHY it wasn’t said.

I actually beleive that Discreet demo’s acurately reflect the product way better than most, some are utterly shameless in regards to the issues that they try and disguise.

    Hi Eskil,

    A couple of quick thoughts,

    I really like

clip browser an file management in DS
The timeline/ tree combo in DS
the ability to paint with FX in DS
    media management in DS

    integrity of media in Discreet
    gestural interface in Discreet
    colour correction in Discreet
    keying in Discreet
    integration of tools in Discreet

    contextual tools in Motion

I’d say your system should be

    RGB 4:4:4
be able to import Avid and FCP timelines
have a good degree of integration with a 3D application
    have a 3D compositing environment
have high quality anti aliasing and motion blur
have a good 3D particle system

also put plent of effort into the ergonomics of the interface, remember how many hours the operator is going to spend looking at it

whats the next big thing? goodness knows, but there seems to be more and more talk about HDR at the high-end these days.

good luck, it’s a daunting challenge

    Hi again Tomas,

yes that seems kind of strange right enough. I’m not an FCP user you can get some expert opinion on FCP tech issues over at the creative cow FCP forum.

    you can find it at

    http://www.creativecow.net/forum/view_posts.php?forumid=8

they should be able to give you the full lowdown there

    Hi again tomas,

As was stated above FCP is resolution independant so if your board will capture 4:4:4 RGB media then FCP will work with that. The black magic and Kona cards will give you mint picture quality but you might want to try out a G5 using files of that size before you part with your cash. I’ve never tried it, but I think interactivity might be pretty slow.

“please transfer your source material to another tape with nice clean continous timecode and do your edit from that tape. Thank you!”

    Hi tomas,

The reference on the Apple site is probably regarding what FCP can capute over firewire(negating the need for a third party Video card) If however you add the Blackmagic card to your box then you can indeed capture 4:4:4 rgb at 10 bits from HDcamSR or whatever.

    Hi,

your doing your students no disservice teaching them FCP and AE. both applications dominate their market sectors and will probably continue to do so for the forseeable future, the most important things for the students to learn is technique: if they nail that then they can easily transfer those skills to different applications. It does however depend what the focus of your course is on, If for example your looking to AE primarily as a motion graphics tool then it’s argueably unsurpassed. If however your course is biased towards compositing then Apple Shake and Discreet combustion are better compositing App’s (AE is a decent compositor but lacks a schematic “tree”).

You might also look at teaching them painting and roto skills (for matte extraction), Curious Gfx is king of the hill in that market sector. Or you might want to look at adding a 3D app to your arsenal so that a student would have the option to go that way if thats what interested them. A word of warning though 3D is a pretty big hill to climb.

If you did decide to go for a 3D app then most 3D apps and compositing app’s work together to a greater or lesser degree but the best combo’s are probably:

    Shake>>>Maya
    Combustion>>3Ds Max
    AE>>Cinema 4D

Flame and Inferno are hero compositing systems costing hundreds of thousands and are way out of reach, ditto Smoke and Fire for finishing editing

    Just to update,

It looks as if I didn’t quite have the full picture as far as Discreet goes. There doesn’t now seem to be that much in it financialy.
