chrisParticipant
i posted a free tutorial that shows a fix for this in max9 using mental ray. its at the http://www.fxphd.com site and its a random free tip on the main page. you might have to refresh the site a few times before it shows up. called something like “arch design shader tip”.
enjoy!

chrisParticipantchrisParticipantcombustin can work well in 16 bit linear (like PNG) or you can work with floating point color in RPF files.

chrisParticipant“stencil layer” feature.

chrisParticipantwhat is the effect you are trying to do?

chrisParticipanta combustion 3d composite doesnt generate a Z-buffer.

chrisParticipantthe clone source can be anything. if its a nested comp, you can transform layers in that comp to animate the clone source pos/rot/scale.

chrisParticipantin the past ive used a particle that looks like steam and tracked it to where i want the distortion. set the size/rate etc and then cut it off that fotage and paste it on a black solid thats the same rez/frame rate etc. this becomes a secondary input to a displacement operator applied to the primary footage.

chrisParticipantmake sure you are using image sequences and not something like MOV or AVI. these will slow combustion down and its always faster to use image sequences (especially uncompressed ones)

chrisParticipantquadro FX cards are better than GeForce, yes. they are both good cards tho. within Combustion, what will benefit is the particles and the 3D compositing.

chrisParticipantkeep in mind miniDV is about the worst case footage to key with.
you can set up a digital still camera and take simple, stop-motion type photos at really high rez ans then down sample them after the key. they will result in better work and the options are pretty open. craft stores have uber-bright green/blue boards you can make a mini-cyclorama out of (not a true chroma key color, but they can work).
