We use Toxik at Handmade more an more nowadays. Make sure you update to 2009 SP1. The difference between 2009 and the SP1 are minmal when it comes to features but the caching is super fast now. Also there are a few major differences now between 2007 and 2009 one of which (they may have made this change in 2008 not sure) is you have to tell the program to use your mediacache in user prefrences otherwise it caches into Ram which is good if you have a slow system but bad if you got a fast raid array.
Toxik is really good now it just needs a few more touches that I hope are on the way. Vector Paint being one of them.
I see. The dedicated media cache drives are also very crucial here. Right now we’re testing 2009 trial version w/ no dedicated media cache drives. The 2007 w/ media cache drives has better performance. How big the media cache drives recommended? Usually we always clean the media cache when it exceeds 400Gb, because Toxik 2007 starts to slow down and crashes often.
I really like to have grid warp in Toxik :).

Things we love are GUI and versioning. We did the render from outside Toxik, using script because it’s a lot faster, and we can sent to backburner as well. We R&D quite a lot the python script, try to automate the multi pass CG files insertion to comp, batch renders, etc. I’m eager to try the new feature in version 2009, the maya integration. Is it possible to do the integration between PC’s or the maya and toxik should be in the same PC?
The downside probably we had a lot of was Exception error (as in Antoine). The worst error is Assertion (something, I forgot the detail). When this one occured, we couldnt re-open the comp…bye2 comp :(. It happened once we lost a whole project due to this error! The reaction node sometimes caused crash. We used reaction quite a lot, some comp can have more than 10 reactions.
The archieving system is still unpredictable, I guess. We can’t restore some archieves, especially the whole project archieves. Comp archieves are quite safe.
Anyway, im sure they fixed a lot of bugs already. Looking forward to test the version 2009!
