You can safely do that to an HDCAMSR tape with either 5.1 discreet audio tracks, or Dolby E encoded tapes. I do it every day.

It seems like the Quantel systems are popular in Europe, and not as much as here in the U.S.
If you go to Quantel’s site, they have user listings there, for what it’s worth.

I use both and they are like apples and oranges. Final Cut Studio is a great set of apps, but other than basic editorial, I wouldn’t want the clients I work with attending an FCS session that involved much more than the basics. IE I would not comp, do beauty work, sky replace, etc. in FCP with hourly clients.
    My opinion, of course.

I am using Smoke with Tinder Sparks. The median filter is inside Tinder 5.1.

One possible solution would be if you have access to the spark/plugin from The Foundry called “Motion Repair”. I have used it for such fixes with excellent results.

“I won’t be able to key your logo over the scene properly without an alpha matte”
Senior art director from Agency: “What’s an alpha matte?”

Client comes into suite and says (dead seriously) “Is it o.k. that I parked in the spot that has a sign above it that reads: “Do not Park Here: Reserved Space. You Will Be Towed!”

Client asks, any idea why the bathroom door is locked? I can’t get in there!”
I respond: “I suppose someone is in there using it!”

Agency producer: “Just do what you did last time!”
Me: Sorry, but this is the first time I’ve seen this project.”
Been asked this at least 6 times.

Client: “It’s a locked-off shot!” Why would it take more than a few minutes to cut her out of the shot?!”

For finishing film trailers, if I had to chose one or the other…Smoke hands down. The editorial capabilities alone make it superior to Inferno/Flame. Smoke has the majority of vfx tools to do what you need to finish film trailers. What Inferno has that Smoke doesn’t is generally immaterial to the majority of the needs for creating film trailers. Batch, 3d tracker and such are great, but you can easily get by without them. If I were to start a small shop I would begin with a Smoke, and as time and billing allowed, add an Inferno. Technicolor last I heard had many seats of Smoke for film finishing.

In the end, it’s the driver that makes the system perform at peak capability of course!

“I think the problem is that there are a long line of replacements”

Like any other business, you get what you pay for. I know from personal experience that when it comes to getting high-caliber freelance help, there aren’t as many great employables waiting to take your job as some would make you believe. As far as the outsourced work I have seen, it is a mixed bag of quality.

There is considerable water cooler chat regarding re-unionizing, if you will. History shows that the “pendulum” swings both ways, and it is swinging towards the organization of labor as labor is repeatedly abused.

The cream will always rise to the top.

History shows that the “pendulum” swings dramatically both ways. I think it is time for things to “swing” in the favor of hard-working, incredibly talented people.

There are the world economy pressures, “budget” constraints, and other real and tangible reasons for our industrie’s predicament. Then there are simple, fixable things that contribute to the problem. Ivy league business school graduates that have no clue as to how the film business operates.
I have seen many decisions made during post production that are mind boggling, and waste enormous amounts of money. Poor planning, incompetent people put in positions of enormous importance, and so on and so on. I can’t go into specific examples here in detail, but let’s just say that they would be the equivalent of redesigning a house whilst being framed. All with the expectation that the architect, builder and other trades continue working for the initial budget. No one wins here but the studios.

I am also interested in hearing from those with FCP/uncompressed experience. The latest from Apple is causing a lot of buzz in post lately. I am just about to order a new Mac Pro desktop system, and will test out things such as Color, and system response when I get it set up.

    I agree Mr. Rasmussen.
Most of the critics of Quantel typically know not of what they speak. Their comments are completely based on heresay, and not practical experience. As far as straight finishing, the iQ/eQ systems are fantastic.
