hi – i have my own system and freelance – but it is a nightmare – the hidden costs are astronical. Things like aircon – discreet maintenance- upgrades – plugin upgrades – digi machines – routers etc etc. but if you can put up with that then the financial reward is good.
jh, ps you do need an office to put it in though – i dont think a client would put up with someones front room or bedroom.

    hi

i use batch all the time on comercials for that very reason – there will always be a comment that will undo everything you have done. i think batch is the best and only real way to work in flame. i have tried the history but it slow the machine down incredibly. i think that batch is a good discipline to get used to – its not as pretty as shakes but far more effective. jh

but i must add – i think that combustion 4 is one of the best bots of software ive seen for a long time – with FCP as the front end and automatic duck in the middle its great. appart from the keying issues i have (which will probably get resolved with plugins – is keylight available for c4?) it is as good as my flame…… all for £800 eh!!

so basically you would recommend it – because i have a flame too and the diamond keyer doesnt seem to cut it as well as the master keyer or also the colour warper (from where it was derived). I am using 10bit HD footage and the green screen is good but i would love to be ablt to key it as well as the primatte or CFC keylight in shake does but in combustion – as shakes attempt at 3D compositing isnt very good at all.

In Combustion is impossible (perhaps with plugins either possible), but you can use one software like Fusion that it has true 3D compositing

    Hi

according to the discreet website it is a true 3D compositor working in true 3D space – so there must be a way, granted probably through plug ins.

    thanks

My worry about getting the Tezro would be future support, as I believe SGI stopped making it at the end of last year due to the Kyoto agreement (same deal as CRT monitors)

    Hi paul

i agree sticking with sgi stuff would be a mistake. But how much will it cost to change to linux, bucket loads of cash im sure knowing autodesk.

    Hi

interesting you should mention upgrading ram and batch crashing before. i had laods of ram before and had to buy more as we needed 3 gigs. batch always crashed all the time before. we installed more ram, but the tech guy said i had had enough ram but it was in the slots in the wrong order. apparently this would cause crashing. so now i have loads more ram (more than i wanted) and it is all in the right slots and batch doesnt crash anymore. SOunds like i could have saved a lot of crashes and time wasted if someone had got it right in the first place……

anyway 9.5.1 going very well, even the paint ‘keep one’ bug has been fixed.

    Hi

on 9.5 my irix version is 6.5, not sure if it went up to that at 9.5 or 9.1

    jh

ps also the ram had to be increased to cope with 64 bit…

    Hi john

thanks for that i will try using history again. i do have a bug with the video not working (when launching flame, then having to go into input clip before it will lock the vbob) and then it works fine.

i can get the motion estimation timewarp to work very well, but it is early days yet, any tips for good results.

and Hi paul, long time no see, yes i like the master keyer better than all the others, nice asnd simple and great results. i like the easy solutions!!

i stopped using history on 9.2, because it slowed everything up so much. so i must try it again. paint in batch is great, importing quicktimes (when it works) is good. everything seems faster ( i had to upgrade the ram). do you have the master keyer in version 8, thats really good.

yes i guess so, i gathered from the lack of replies that maybe not many people were running it yet. i still have good things to report, no major issues as yet. a good release (i think, dont hold me to that)….
