if i remember this one right those example files used to be on the discreet ftp a few years ago.

I’ve here a problem in conjunction with the tutorial footage… I have the CDs but they are from an old version of inferno… when I now load them, I just see the first and last image… has anyone encountered something like this? I don’t really need them… but if someone knows this problem 🙂

Without opening the file archive, you won’t be able to see all frames. You have to select those clips in archive module, and click on load. You can load those clips into a library or to desktop.

yes, both antialiasing and also moblur (if your camera is fast) will help. But after some amount of fast motion, you can not eliminate strobing effect on a 24fps display.

    Are you printing to film?

The new combustion v4 has the diamond keyer, it is the same keyer that colorwarper uses on flame/inferno/smoke. So the selection range could be defined with diamond keyer, the same way as discreet advanced systems. And then use the standart color corrector with your matte outputs from diamond keyer, and bingo.

Kuruizuki is right. Why would you replace faces, when you can shoot them? Just dress the actor like that, and maybe you can also do 2D warps, to give the actor a childish look, with warped body proportions.

We just picked up a used octane2 with flame from an out-of-business auction.. Trying to get it to work while I dig up the budget for stone storage…

    I keep reading that you can fake a framestore using a file on the system drive, but cant figure out how, can anyone point me in the right direction? Ive tried the flint approach of;
    FrameStore /framestore.fs,””,200
and Ive tried pointing to a spare scsi drive
    FrameStore /mnt
but I keep getting the missing metadata -1 or metadata 0 errors… any help would be appreciated!

Ok, it was possible in the old wimes. The last version that supported a file as the framestore was, flame v7.7.4. If you have flame v9, you must have stones. But if you have bought a complete system, it should have stones. But even with v7.7.4, you will need a special license from discreet (oops, autodesk media and entertainment) 🙂 Without that license, your framestore will be limited to 2GB only! That license was given at no cost. That was only for support purposes!

In the older versions, until flame v6.6.x, there was no need for a special license for filesystem framestores. Starting with flame v8.x and newer, stone is a must! So you have to pay the license for stonefs! These days, stones are not that expensive, discreet doesn’t charge too much, if you already have a stone, and just want to upgrade to IR146. It should only cost 20% more in total compared to a deal from OEM suppliers, only if you are a good trader.

We run inferno6 on onyx2 with rm9-64 boards. It works w/o problems. That gfx subsystem should be named ir2.

    hope this helps,

I tested both flame tezro and flint linux boxes with a simple setup. Here it is:

Take one 2K_8bit layer, and animate it over 100 frames, just set 16 antialias, and 50 sample moblur. It makes 800 samples per frame!

    Tezro: 34min
    linux: 18min

I also posted these results to flame-news, but JF mentioned, this can not be taken as benchmark results. But it measures something about texture fill and accumulation speed.

I haven’t compared cpu speeds. But with single processor tasks, I would expect linux to run faster. Just like a particle explode setup with 500K particles! Those tasks are dependant on one cpu only, and 4p tezro won’t help.

Maybe 4p tezro can have the same cpu performance as a 2p Xeon, but only if software utilizes all cpus.

Overall, linux box is great for SD resolution. With many many 2K layers, tezro might be faster. Here is my thought about linux and tezro:

If you are going to do DI work, buy 4p tezro. If you do SD work, go buy linux. You will miss the modular keyer, but flint is much cheaper 🙂

Sync pulse generator generates a reference signal for all video devices. This makes all devices to lock to that frame sync. If you don’t have that, one device will be scanning line 205, another will be scanning line 187 for example…

They might all scan at the same frame rate, but there will be a phase difference, if they aren’t locked eachother. The best way is to have a black box, which generates this pulse for you, and sits in a 1U rack.

here is a used tektronix NTSC SPG. The brand new one should cost a few thousands. Without having this, you won’t have a house sync. Which may even lead to system crash. Always be sure to feen good sync to the system.

But, I finally found that it was just the VTR linked with the Flame that was off.

    Take care.
    Alfafa

So that might be the sync is feed from VTR. Which is not a suggested connection! I would feed the box from an Sync pulse gen. 😉

Yes, action particle system is very good for that kind of jobs. Especially it is 3D. Maybe you can also 3D track the shot. So all the perspective will be much more realistic then. And add some moblur, add simulate some forces like wind. You will have a very good result.

    TW.

I just want to add that, and octane1 can do HDCAM I/O over the SD board. But you need a special option board on the HDCAM Vtr, and you have to decode the captured material before using it.

Not very elegant, but a cheaper option…

    1. Did it start after you typed flame, and flame changed to 30Hzf?
    2. Or you just powered on the box, and ven the startup screen shakes?

If it is the first one, I would check the sync connections. But if it is the second option, then I would be suspicious of flame hardware 😥

That’s the lighting connection. You can make a light include a node, or exclude a node. Just switch to lighting mode, and draw a line between the light and the node which should be affected. And if you want to exlude a node from a light, just draw this line in lighting mode, while holding down the alt key.

PS: By default, a light affects all nodes in the scene.

Why don’t you shoot it completely on white? I am not very experienced on shooting, but if it’s possible to shoot in a white room, you will just need to correct highlights a little, just adjust the gain, and you won’t see any darker white areas. If possible, this might work better than greenbox.
