You should be getting full playback performance with PFPlay on the system that you suggest, I can’t imagine what is going on. We just tested here and on an opteron system wiuth a geforce 6600 on PCI-Express we get over 30FPS playing back 10-bit 2K DPX files.

Can you perhaps contact me directly and send me some sample files from the sequence that you are trying to display? I’d be happy to arrange for someone to take a look at the issue for you. Windows was the last port we did after OSX and Linux, so something perfromance wise may have slipped through the net.

PFPlay can operate without importing footage into the vault, just depends what platform you want to use. It’s not possible on the MAc platofrm, but Linux (32 bit and 64 bit) and windows(depending on the hardware) can play DPX directly from the Raid array.

You can contact me or a pixel farm reseller directly and find out more.

If you need 12 bit playback, you’ll ned an Irix box as AFAIK they are still the only boxes that can do 12 bit (I’ve heard Nvidia are promising this but not just yet, could be wrong)

Actually, I’ll correct myself re the graphics cards after re-reading the post. Looks like the 6800 is no longer available for these macs, which was double height, the 6600 and the could be single height, but you can still only put one of them in at a time.

The Quadro FX 4500 IS double height though, but that beastie has enough oomph to drive 4 monitors (not sure if that config is supported through Osx) anyway. Also, how much real estate do you want, are 2 30 inch apple monitors not enough for you? 😉

‘four PCI Express slots capable of driving up to 8 monitors simultaneously.’

😯 not sure how you are doing your maths, but you can only fit one graphics card into the mac. Just because it has 4 PCI-Express slots does not mean that you can fit 4 graphics cards physically into the box, in fact if the layout of the expansion slots is the same as the origonal g5, you will actually cover one of those extra PCI-Express slots with the Nvidia graphics cards, which are generally double height.

Still, veerry nice machines, waiting on ours for dev and expecting great things of them in combination with the OS.

Actually, just after I sent that the following press release came through. http://www.sgi.com/company_info/newsroom/press_releases/2005/september/sgi_dvs.html – Confirms the card is available.

The boards are based on open ML which means other video I/O boards are in the pipeline from other manufacturers(Aja,Bluefish), they should pretty much just plug and play ; )

No more DM2/5 !!!! (probably a good thing considering the reliability and cost issues!)

They had the machine at IBC in back room demo’s. I didn’t see the demo so couldn’t comment on the quality of the port, or a planned release date. I think I can say that SGI are releasing a kernal and service pack update that will add support for their new HD video card this month, maybe discreet(sorry, autodesk) are holding back for that(?)

FYI, we have been using the prism products for 4K playback(with the sony projector), and a range of new film products we are developing and they are pretty impressive machines for the tasks they are designed to cover. I am not talking about workstation type tasks here, but if you need 10X mutliple 2K or 4K streams for edtiting, or multi-pipe architecture for 4K/6K/8K etc display, these are the machines to do it…

We used the new deskside dual proc prism to demo our new image prep application and we nearly fell of our seats when we saw how fast it was in comparison to a dual 2.7 gig mac. It was approx 3-4 times faster, and threw 2K plates around like they were 320X240 quicktimes.

Look to NAB to see the new hardware architecture which is really impressive, IMHO the current machines are more transitionary for the media industry. Nab should see that change, and no, I can’t really say much more ; )

PFTrack V3 has tools designed to specifically deal with this, I posted the info into the other thread that discusses the same issues, you can take a look at PFTrack 3 on the pixelfarms website http://www.thepixelfarm.co.uk

Take a look at PFTrack V3 from The Pixel Farm. It has tools to track 3D geometry into plates. You can then simply apply a texture to the geometry and comp in 3D in flame, or render of 2D and comp in shake. It’s very easy to use and was used extensively by Stan Winston for the Fantastic 4.
