Hi,
Shake 2.5 is a very good tool for compositing however that is on of its only strongest points. It is slightly faster then combustion. However when it comes to painting tools and more fully rounded toolset combustion would probably be a better option for compsoting, motion graphics etc.
Shake is a node based compositor where combustion is a layer based compositor (more like After Effects).
Also price-point is a consideration. Shake is at $5000 for MAC $10000 for Windows. Combustion is $995 for both Mac and PC….

Splice_MeisterParticipantHi…
Firstly when dealing with footage from SP you need to specify to combustion what the field order is… so you expand your layer select footage and in the source menu there is a field order option. For PAL Sp, set the field order to upper first.
As for cleaning the edges, this actually takes a bit of practice on your part. You need to use the softness and tolerance values plus the histogram to achieve a clean key.. any colour spill can be supressed using the colour suppression menu within the keyer…..

Splice_MeisterParticipantI have the same problem as well in combustion 2.01 and2.0…
This has been resolved in the new 2.1 patch. You can download this from the discreet website.

Splice_MeisterParticipantQuality wise, Combustion is extremely clean and there are no problems with the 2k images. This is provided you have setup your LUTs correctly… Combustion has been used on quite a few films already and it gets the job done…
When you are looking at speed, you can’t compare a Flame running on an Octane 2 to a PC or a Mac… It will be slower in this case.
I find alot of facilities push work to the combustion system because it is cheaper to run and if there is a reason to go to inferno then you can transfer some of the set-ups to the inferno/flame…..
Splice_MeisterParticipantTry applying a grey filter to your particles and render that out… Then render out the full colour particles and try use the grayscale particles as a matte for the full colour…

Splice_MeisterParticipantYup… I know about transparency…..
Create a solid layer apply your particles to the solid layer and then use the “Screen” transfer mode under surface properties and it should compiste fine ontop of other layers…

Splice_MeisterParticipantHi Pil,
In combustion, create a composition and then you can create a transparent layer and add a particles operator to the layer…..
You can then create your particles etc…..
Render out the composite with an alpha channel and you’re done….
