    Hi Vikas,
Sorry, about some of the earlier confusion, I was wondering why you had two postings, one asking about demo versions of IFF and one saying you had 2 years experience on IFF.
    Okay, here’s a more helpful reply 🙂
Just because your university has sgi systems does not necessarily mean IFF software will run on them. Firstly, IFF use specialised media storage drives called stones. Without stones attached to the sgi’s you won’t be able to run even evaluation copies of IFF. (Also, they would need the video I/O boards.) I think it is highly unlikely that discreet/Autodesk would be in a position to loan you the additional hardware you will probably need.
A better option might be to contact some of the film studios in legendary “Bollywood” and find out which of them have IFF systems already. Put together a showreel of your combustion work and send it to them with an offer to work as an “intern” during University holidays. You won’t get to jump onto flame on day one but it’s a foot in the door.
Also, the internet is your friend ! Go onto the discreet site and lookup your local reseller. Find out from them who is using IFF and do the showreel thing with them as well. The more you sow, the more you will reap 😀
    Good luck

I also find this a bit of a bizarre posting as the same person has posted a question about downloading a crack/demo version of IFF. If this person has 2 years experience, why would they want a demo version ?
    cheers

If you have the correct hardware configuration (ie, Tezro/Octane2 with stone, I/O etc) you can request an evaluation license of IFF from discreet/Autodesk.
In other words, if you’ve got an IRIX smoke, you could run flame as partner software. Ditto for fire / inferno.
But without the proper hardware, you don’t have a chance ! There isn’t a Windows or Mac version of IFF/SF for demo/eval purposes.

I’m not certain if this will work but before launching flint, hold down shift+t+ insert (3 keys). This forces IFF to see the tablet. You may have to do this after launching flint, I can’t remember !
I’ve seen this work on smoke / Octane2 so it might work for flint.

Discreet says that an inferno can use real time in such files, although it seems hard to believe. I guess the only solution would be to build your own system, but that will probaly cost you $25,000,000+

And for that kind of money you could just about buy Vista Systems and be your own boss 😉

This certainly isn’t a post-production system you’re looking for. In fact, sounds more like the kind of kit the Rolling Stones would use on a world tour ! I would recommend contacting some of the companies who specialise in live event systems.
I have a collegue who did all the visual effects for the Canadian band “Rush” who had a similar requirement during their world tour. (Timing live camera feeds, with CG visuals and pyrotechnics) It’s very specialised technology and probably not for the faint hearted.

    Good luck

    Hi Tomas,
Angus (and the Apple technician are right) FCP, like discreet’s IFF/SF systems, is resolution independant. FCP works with Quicktime files so provided the media is in Quicktime format, FCP can see it.
However, as I understand it, the Black Magic card will create 4:4:4 Quicktime files but it doesn’t offer any additional processing or acceleration so most effects have to be rendered. Maybe someone else can shed some light on this.

Thanks, his c4 upgrade is on it’s way. We’re just confused as to why it worked (apparently) in c3.02 but not c3.04.
Discreet UK couldn’t get the .m2v file we mailed them to work in any version of c3 so they couldn’t replicate the problem. There seem to be so many “interpretations” of mpeg structures that it’s near impossible to guarantee any kind of file compatibility

This is just a thought ‘cos I’m a reseller not a digital artist. 😳
But if you’re taking a blue screen with you, you could try placing it between your foreground trees and background forest to give you two seperate “layers” (Call them layer A – foreground, layer C – background forest) You could them “insert” your CG character between the two (layer B)
It would still be a comping nightmare though.
Otherwise, why not CG a tree foreground and use that as layer A and blend the two together.
As usual, a totally rubbish idea from someone who still marvels at realtime page curls !

Gathered my thoughts a bit more clearly.
What I was trying to say in my previous post is, we’ve had a variety of non-linear tools for ages, but post has largely remained a “linear” process. For eg, editing has still followed the ‘off-line’ – ‘on-line’ – ‘audio final mix’ path, which means that onlining had to wait for the offline EDL, and audio mix couldn’t begin until the online had been completed. Likewise for vfx, basic wire removal would have to preceed blue screen keying etc before the plate could be used in a final comp. Toxik appears to be the first commercially available system that creates a “non-linear” workflow. It’s a bit like having your own ILM – Sabre set-up !
Another positive report I’ve heard is that Toxik doesn’t use the stone file system so you’re not locked into using stone disk arrays. If you offset this against the initial costs of Toxik I guess you could put a kick-ass system together for a relatively reasonable outlay. Toxik is obviously geared towards the DI / film market and we all know that 2K/4K data eats up disk space at a scary rate.

    Hi Johnny,
Speed ramping (or Time Warp as discreet call it) is listed as a new feature in combustion v4 so I guess an upgrade is on the cards.
You might have to take the clip into another app, do the ramp in that, render out as QT (or whatever works for you) and import into combustion.

I think it’s really tough to establish what the price and minimum seat situation should be because it’s a very unique kind of product.
The value lies in all the underlying technology that “glues” the Toxik stations together, and it’s not practical to benchmark 5 Toxik seats against 5 Shake seats, even on shared storage. And it’s equally impractical to base the price on the toolset. I’ve heard that combustion has a broader feature set than the initial release of Toxik will have (although it will grow over time). So who would pay $6500 for an app that offers less than $1000 combustion ? Having said that, it wasn’t so long ago that combustion was a $5500 piece of software.
There’s a lot of unchartered water behind and beneath Toxik and I think it’s premature to start making assuptions before we’ve all had a chance to see the final release in action.
I also think I’ve contradicted myself several times in this post 🙂

The 5 seat requirement is mentioned right here on fxguide. I was scouring the discreet link.
