Star Wars: The Force Awakens won the Special Visual Effects award at this year’s BAFTA Awards in London overnight. The recipients were special effects supervisor Chris Corbould, ILM supes Roger Guyett and Paul Kavanagh and creature effects supervisor Neal Scanlan, who beat out the teams from Ant-Man, Mad Max: Fury Road, Ex Machina and The Martian.
It should be noted “Mad Max: Fury Road” did not go home empty handed with four BAFTAs – all in the craft / technical areas: costume design, Production Design, Makeup and Hair and very deservedly for Editing.
A similar line-up of films, of course, is nominated for the Academy VFX award, although The Revenant is in place of Ant-Man at the Oscars. The Force Awakens also took out the major prize at the VES Awards.
Meanwhile, Inside Out (dir. Pete Docter) took out the award for animated film and The Revenant (DOP: Emmanuel Lubezki) won for cinematography.
