fxpodcast #374: Cathedrals, ruins & presidents – places and faces with Paul Debevec

Dr. Paul Debevec is a computer graphics researcher known worldwide for his work in finding, capturing, and synthesising the rendering of environments and human faces. Today, he is Chief Research Officer, Eyeline Studios – Powered by Netflix.

It is the 25th year of fxguide, but more significantly, it is also the 25th anniversary of Paul’s project Fiat Lux, the 20th anniversary of The Parthenon short film, and the 10th anniversary of Paul and his team’s 3D scanning President Obama.

Paul Debevec has long been a friend of fxguide, so we welcomed a chance to sit down with him and revisit these three hugely significant projects.

Debevec and his team have produced several short films that have premiered at SIGGRAPH’s annual Electronic Theater, including Fiat Lux (1999) and The Parthenon (2004).

Along with Tim Hawkins, John Monos and Mark Sagar, Paul Debevec was awarded a 2010 Scientific and Engineering Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the design and engineering of the Light Stage capture devices and the image-based facial rendering system developed for character relighting in motion pictures. A portable Lightstage was used to scan the president.

Finally, here is Paul’s Emmy Video for his Charles F. Jenkins Lifetime Achievement Award.
