And Another One Bites the Dust: Dalsa Sold to Arri

Dalsa is selling its camera division to Arri. Under the terms of the deal released to the stock exchange, Dalsa will sell its camera division, help develop future sensor chips for Arri, and seek to also sell its rental division separately. Faced with continuing losses in their high end camera sector, compared with modest profits in their other chip and sensor operations, Dalsa is off loading their cameras to Arri.

“The actions we undertook in the third quarter to stem further losses in our Digital Cinema initiative will now allow us to focus our attention more fully on our core Digital Imaging and Semiconductor businesses, and to further build on their success moving forward,” commented Brian Doody, Chief Executive Officer of DALSA Corporation.

From the Press release

DALSA Corporation an international leader in high performance digital imaging and semiconductors, today reported revenues of $52.6 million for the quarter ended September 30, 2008, and net income from continuing operations of $6.0 million or $0.32 per share, diluted.

DALSA is committed to eliminating the ongoing losses in the Digital Cinema division by the end of 2008. The Company has recently entered into a non-binding letter of intent (“LOI”), which includes a 30-day period of exclusive negotiations, with Arnold & Richter Cine Technik GmbH (“ARRI”), one of the world’s leading manufacturers of cinematography cameras. Under the terms of the LOI, ARRI would acquire certain existing assets of the DALSA Digital Cinema division. Concurrently, DALSA and ARRI would enter into a technology partnership agreement whereby DALSA will develop for ARRI custom high performance CCD image sensors and related products. Furthermore, DALSA would supply the developed products to ARRI for digital cinematography applications through DALSA’s core businesses. Related to the transaction contemplated by the LOI, DALSA will endeavour to find a buyer for its Los Angeles based camera rental operations.

  1. The digital revolution will quietly go the way of the 16mm revolution that happened after WW2. Too many players growing too fast in a market that really hasn’t grown in over 50 years. It’s a horrible thing to say but in 10 years time only the big camera manufacturers will be left in the market.

  2. Dalsa completely dropped the ball with digital Cine.
To much time was wasted and and thier thinking is long passed
Dalsa looks built on Nasa and US Gov Money, and they are history soon
    just like many others.
Machine Vision is a dime a dozen now, kids have the same software interface at home with a web cam.
The nasty beast that crawled up the leg of the music and audio recording industry
is now crawling up the leg of the film and vision industy, its called Disposibility,
Its now a free for all and nothing matters any more, its all, lies, lies, lies.
