In light of Ascent Media’s decision to only buy da Vinci colour correctors, for transfering and DI – this week we speak to Erik Rogers at Company 3 in LA.

Erik Rogers is the Digital Intermediate Producer at Company 3 in LA. We spoke to him this week about the general film workflow at Company 3, – examining some of the newest techniques that Company 3 has developed for Pirates of the Caribbean, and the future directions Company 3 is exploring.

Erik Rogers has been the veteran of the Company 3 Features production team starting the features team in 2002. His credits include Bad Boys II, Collateral, Man on Fire, Constantine, King Arthur, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, and Miami Vice. Rogers began his career in film and television with Pacific Ocean Post and later served as Executive Producer of the boutique visual effects house Sea Level. He then pursued a career as a Post Production Supervisor at the editorial house Spotwelders before joining Stefan Sonnenfeld to begin CO3 Features. A native of Phoenix, Rogers studied economics at Syracuse University and we were pleased to learn that he also played basketball for the Orangemen on a team that was runner-up for a national championship in 1987 !

Company 3 is a full service post house that covers commercials, music videos to feature films. Formed in 1997 by Stefan Sonnenfeld and Mike Pethel. The LA office has seven (7) Sprit telecine’s as well as Digital intermediate (DI) theatres. The company is known for its outstanding teclecine and film handling reputation, and as such they have an impressive list of clients and film credits including Pirates of Caribbean, Mission Impossible 3, Xmen Last Stand, and many many others. Company 3 is a part of Ascent Media, one of the largest and most influencial post groups in the world.

Given the growth of DI – Ascent Media’s decision to rely on just da Vinci is significant. “We looked at several systems but selected da Vinci because of their ability to handle 2K and 4K deliverables with such speed and efficiency,” said Stefan Sonnenfeld, president of Company 3 and senior vice president for Ascent Media Creative Services. “We were particularly interested in Resolve’s SAN-based workflow and formatting capabilities, which will afford our artists increased flexibility, performance, and control for grading and delivery of both feature film and commercial material.”

Resolve has been in at R!ot, is going online soon at Encore and Company 3. While the 2K plus is one of the world’s most successful colour grading desks, the Resolve is relatively new. “We’ve had a long-standing and collaborative relationship with Ascent Media, and we are pleased that they recognize just how powerful an impact Resolve can make within their post-production facilities,” said Bill Robertson, vice president and general manager of da Vinci Systems. “da Vinci was able to tailor Resolve to meet the specific needs of Ascent’s workflow and existing infrastructure, and we are confident that the new Resolve standard for Ascent’s DI will enhance efficiencies and creativity in Ascent facilities worldwide.”
