Media solutions developer 5D has revealed that its family of compositing, visual effects, colour grading, and record and review systems are all playing key roles in the digital intermediate process for motion pictures and visual effects post production worldwide.

These systems will be shown at 5D’s booth (#S3908) during NAB 2002, when 5D Cyborg, 5D Colossus and 5D Commander will feature actual job re-constructions to tell the story of how 5D products improve digital intermediate workflow for motion pictures and high-end post-production.

5D Colossus, the software-based digital grading and mastering system, shipping at NAB 2002, has been used by The Post House to grade and master over 3,000 shots on The Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of The Ring winner of multiple BAFTA, Golden Globe and Academy Awards, including the Oscar for Best Cinematography for DP Andrew Lesnie. The system is now being used to grade and master the second and third movies in the trilogy, The Two Towers and The Return of the King, bringing the total shots to around 10,000.

Adding to this success, 5Ds Cyborg effects editor and 5D Commander record and review station, are playing key roles within digital intermediate pipelines at visual effects studios worldwide, delivering significant operational cost savings on a range of award-winning and box-office successes. Movies involving 5D systems include

The Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of The Ring, A Beautiful Mind, Vanilla Sky, The Time Machine and We Were Soldiers at Digital Domain, L.A.

Black Hawk Down, K-19: The Widowmaker, The Shipping News and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets at The Mill and Mill Film

Behind Enemy Lines and The One at Digital Film Works, L.A.

Feardotcom, The Musketeer and Roman Polanskis The Pianist at Das Werk, Munich

5D also recently provided 5D Cyborg and 5D Colossus systems for an Academy Awards Promotional Trailer which was shown in 16,000 cinemas across the USA prior to the 74th Academy Awards on March 24th.

Its a great thrill to us that 5D systems are at the core of the motion picture industry, creating stunning visual effects and finessing some of todays biggest theatrical releases, said Marc Dando, a director at 5D. 5D systems support digital artists, cinematographers and directors in the pursuit of their artistic and creative visions.
