With great sadness we report that Mill Film in the UK shut its doors today. Mill film has been a truely great contributor of visual effects shots, most noticeable Gladiator, for which they won the Academy Award and many others such as Black Hawk Down.

FXGuide spoke to the Mill on the phone, today and can confirm the rumour that Mill Film has closed its doors.

Importantly, Mill film is closing, the Mill is not, the award winning commercials and long form division is still completely in business. In recent times the Mill has opened a NY office and it is understood that this will remain open as it is the Mill and not Mill Film.

Mooney, who joined Mill Film in 1997, has played a key role as visual effects supervisor not only for Harry Potter and Tomb Raider but also Gangster No 1, My Life so Far, and Babe; Pig in the City. Since fellow Mill Film supervisor Tim Burke picked up an Oscar for best visual effects for Ridley Scott’s Gladiator last year, Mill Film has worked on several high profile films, three of which – Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Black Hawk Down and Cats & Dogs – were in the ‘bake-offs’ for this years visual effects Oscars.

Not all the staff have gone yet, but it is official and many people have already gone. There is no news on the equipment but it is hoped to re use as much as
possible inside the Mill.

We wish all the staff of both the Mill and Mill Film all the best. They are exceptionally talented professionals who have really achieved a great deal.
