The 2003 Visual Effects Oscar Nominees are…

The films nominated for the 2003 Best Visual Effect Oscar are:

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Jim Rygiel, Joe Letteri, Randall William Cook and Alex Funke

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
Daniel Sudick, Stefen Fangmeier, Nathan McGuinness and Robert Stromberg

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
John Knoll, Hal Hickel, Charles Gibson and Terry Frazee

One January 21st, seven films were presented to Academy members in the annual Bake-Off (see 2003 Bake-Off story). Members then voted to narrow the list to the three films nominated this year.

There were also some nominations in the Scientific and Technical awards that apply to our world:

SCIENTIFIC AND ENGINEERING AWARDS
Stephen Regelous
for the design and development of “Massive,” the autonomous agent animation system used for the battle sequences in THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy.

TECHNICAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS
Henrik Wann Jensen, Stephen R. Marschner and Pat Hanrahan
for their pioneering research in simulating subsurface scattering of light in translucent materials as presented in their paper “A Practical Model for Subsurface Light Transport.”

Christophe Hery, Ken McGaugh and Joe Letteri
for their groundbreaking implementations of practical methods for rendering skin and other translucent materials using subsurface scattering techniques.

Scientific and Technical Awards will be presented on February 14th. Jennifer Garner will host this presentation as well as delivering a run down of the Sci-Tech awards during the Oscars telecast.

The 2003 Academy Awards will be presented on Sunday, February 29, 2004, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland® and will be televised live by ABC at 5 p.m. PST.
