87th Oscars – the ten VFX contenders

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has released the names of the 10 films in contention for the visual effects award for the 87th Academy Awards. Here’s the list:

Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Godzilla
Guardians of the Galaxy
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
Interstellar
Maleficent
Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb
Transformers: Age of Extinction
X-Men: Days of Future Past

The VFX bake-off for the 10 films takes place on January 10th, and the five remaining contenders will go to the Oscars on February 22nd.

So, what do you think? Which films will make the final five? And who do you think missed out in the 10?

Interestingly, we accurately predicted this list with our WIRED top 10 – the primary difference is that the Oscar list includes 2 films not in release so we could not rate them to include them: The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies and Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, which pushed out Noah and Edge of Tomorrow from our list.
