This week we explore the Foundation. The thousand-year saga of humans scattered on planets throughout the galaxy all living under the rule of the genetically engineered Empire. Dr. Hari Seldon (Jarred Harris) and his followers attempt to preserve their culture as a complex galaxy chess game is played out around them, with an increasingly unhinged Day played brilliantly by Lee Pace. The series was created by David S. Goyer and Josh Friedman for Apple TV+, and it is loosely based on the Foundation series of stories by Isaac Asimov.

The huge range of visual effects was led by Chris MacLean. The VFX were made by a set of companies including Cinesite, Framestore, Image Engine, Important Looking Pirates, Outpost VFX, Rodeo FX, Trixter, and Crafty Apes.
As mentioned in this week’s episode, various episodes were directed by Roxann Dawson, who played B’Elanna Torres on the television series Star Trek: Voyager and Alex Graves (West Wing, Game of Thrones).
“We kind of live in Candy Mountain on Foundation, because visual effects have such an important role in the show,” said VFX supervisor Chris MacLean at Apple TV+ and Deadline’s VXF+ recent event.”Our most important job is to “make sure everybody doesn’t pay attention to what we’re doing.”
This is our 274th episode – next week marks 275 episodes since the show started in 2006. With Jason Diamond joining in 2009 and Matt Wallin joining in 2010. That is 17 years of reviewing VFX films and TV shows here in the VFXShow.
