And the winner is amongst these…
Filed under: fxNewswire by Mike Seymour @ 2:18 pm on December 18, 2007

Variety is reporting that The Motion Picture Academy’s Oscar will be decided from “Beowulf,” “The Bourne Ultimatum,” “Evan Almighty,” “The Golden Compass,” “Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix,” “I Am Legend,” “Live Free Or Die Hard,” “National Treasure: Book Of Secrets,” “Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World’s End,” “Ratatouille,” “Spider-Man 3,” “Sunshine,” “300,” “Transformers,” and “The Water Horse.” These are the contenders and the 15 films that will be considered for the January “bake-off.” Seven of these will compete in the bake-off. Three of those seven will receive nominations. And then just one will have a very good office party come the actual night of the Oscars.

As discussed in an earlier article by David Cohen, the visual effects branch has made an unprecedented statement in support of visual effects in animated films as it included “Ratatouille” and “Beowulf” over such effects-heavy live-action pics as “Enchanted” and “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.” Given that there is a relatively new Oscar just for Best Animated Film the debate centered around also allowing those same films to compete for the Effects Oscar.

Digital Domain files for IPO
Filed under: fxNewswire by Jeff Heusser @ 12:31 pm on December 14, 2007

dscn1110cu.jpgDigital Domain this week filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission for a $100 Million Dollar Initial Public Offering. According to the filing, DD “will use our remaining net proceeds from this offering to implement our growth strategy by, among other things, expanding our technology development and licensing program and attempting to enter into the production of animated and visual effects-driven feature films and the development and production of video games, as well as for general corporate purposes, including working capital and capital expenditures.”

An article in the Hollywood Reporter includes speculation that the IPO is a move to attract a buyer. Earlier this year Digital Domain acquired The Foundry and moved development of Nuke compositing software to the UK.

What impact will this have on the development of Nuke? From the filing, which lays out the company’s growth strategy, one would expect little change. Click through for highlights from the filing.

NVIDIA buys Mental Images
Filed under: fxNewswire by Mike Seymour @ 7:21 pm on December 13, 2007

divine.jpgFrom the press releases on NVIDIA site and Mental Images, the chip maker based in Santa Clara, CA has bought Mental Images (Berlin, Germany), makers of Mental Ray. Cash or share details of the transaction are yet to be published. NVIDIA has seen its share price swing between $25 a share to $37 and back to around $34.50 at close of trading today. NVIDIA has been out performing the Dow Jones Industrial over the period and trading at a forward P/E of 27.10 - so the company appears in good shape and well placed to build on Mental Images already very solid user base.

Clearly the move to owning Mental Images will be significant for future visual effects development, but sources wonder if this also could mean Mental Images moving further into Gaming, a big market for the GPU chip maker. NVIDIA currently holds a 38% share of Desktop Graphics systems. Mental images was awarded an Academy Award for their contributions to the film industry in 2003 for their mental ray rendering software. (image Erik Anderson : Rendered with mental ray)

We are not organized or sponsored by any union, guild or association. We are a spontaneous grass-roots outgrowth of the concern and desire of below-the-line industry professionals and vendors whose jobs, livelihoods and futures hang in the balance.
