We have been doing a bit of work with HDR lately.
The process here is take a set of bracketted image on a digital stills camera of a mirror ball on set. Crop them in Graphic convertor. Then take them into HDRSHOP and produce an HDR image – then using the lightgen plugin for HDRShop.. produce a maya lighting plan for the 3D guys to light with. ( btw if you are doing this the camera calibration step is vital).

Just wondering how many other on set visual effects supervisors are doing HDR capture on set ?

The jobs in Turkey are by no means as complicated as the ones in Europe, US or Australia, I wish they were 🙂 , even film compositing is rare.

Apart from professional issues, with a cgi programmer friend of mine (who works for the Brazil r/s team) we have done some captures with a Nikon coolpix 995 digital still camera and played around with them in HDRShop. He has also written a free 3ds Max plugin for HDR images which is distributed by Splutterfish.

You can reach Cuneyt’s software pages here
