Hi all.
I am a smoke artist that is fairly unix savvy. I am setting up a new pc to sit next to the smoke, and was thinking about dual booting with some sort of linux. The main reason for this would be that I like unix and donÂ’t like networking windows with irix. Has anyone else done this? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

I don’t work in that place anymore, but to the extend of my knowledge there have not been any significant problems transferring files between each other.
On the other hand I had a lot of problems with a Windows 2000 server, specially during the transfer of a big number of image sequence files.
Windows, has a lot of problems with these kinds of files…So I guess working between Linux and IRIX would be much simpler and less hassle Windows has to many issues all the time to be anything closer to reliable, specially if you want to transfer files between these machines.
Hope it helps
Cheers 😀

emm, i wired my smoke and flame boxes to linux. primarily for the same
reason we all use a pc/mac beside flame/smoke.
must say it works very smooth. (sometimes had problems with windows based pc).
also i use it for batch stuff on media. (convert, resize, etc).
i am no guru in networking or unix, but i know a thing or two, so,
setting up a unix to unix network..is quite easy.
you can find milliions of docs and howtos on this topic on the internet.
(not sure but i guess the discreet manual should tell you how to do it)the good part is making things automatic. with just a reasonable amount
of shell scripting (or whatever) you can really solve those anoying tasks
with just a command or two.(i enjoy more working on flame than writing scripts, but then again,
there are things you have to do to have a nice quiet life in a post house).se.
