Ex Machina wins Oscar for Visual Effects

In a huge surprise, Ex Machina took out the Achievement in Visual Effects award at this year’s Academy Awards. The award was presented to Andrew Whitehurst, Paul Norris, Mark Ardington and Sara Bennett (who, by the way, is only the second woman ever to win an Oscar for VFX – the first was Susan Benson for Aliens in 1987).

Andy Serkis presented the award after paying tribute to the mastercraftsmen and women behind the work.

Congratulations to all the nominees. Ex Machina beat out a spectacular group of films: Mad Max: Fury Road, The Revenant, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and The Martian.

Meanwhile, Pixar’s Inside Out won for Best Animated Feature (Pete Docter and Jonas Rivera).
