As we enter award season we turn our attention to some of the best visual effects films of this last year and talk to ILM’s Alex Wuttke about Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,.

Ten films are in the running in the Visual Effects category for the 96th Academy Awards. The Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee determined the shortlist. The bake-off will be held Saturday, January 13, 2024. Branch members will then vote to nominate five films for final Oscar consideration.

In addition to Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, the other films, listed in alphabetical order by title, are:

Godzilla Minus One
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
Napoleon
Poor Things
Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire
Society of the Snow
and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Nominations voting begins on January 11, and concludes on Tuesday, January 16, 2024. The Nominations will then be announced on Tuesday, January 23, 2024.

The 96th Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 10, 2024, at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood and will be televised live in more than 200 territories worldwide.

In this episode, we talk to Alex Wuttke, VFX supervisor of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.

 

Alex Wuttke joined ILM’s London studio in the spring of 2017 as the on-set Visual Effects Supervisor for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and then Six Minutes to Midnight (2020). Wuttke’s prior credits include Die Another Day, Tomb Raider 2, Quantum of SolaceThor 2: The Dark World, Spectre and Wonder Woman. As you can hear in this week’s show Alex drew on his prior James Bond experiences when preparing for Mission: Impossible.

Wuttke studied Sound Engineering at Kingston University and Graphic Design at Central Saint Martins. After having worked as a graphic designer and sound engineer, Wuttke began his visual effects career as a Junior TD at Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. Wuttke is a member of BAFTA and was nominated for Best Special Visual Effects BAFTA Award for Ant-Man in 2015.
