Over the last couple of years when fxguide has covered the visual effects of large feature films, we’ve often heard about the incredible performance capture work being done by Disney Research Zurich to bring digital characters to life, whether that might be a raging Hulk or leaping Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. Now, fxguide’s very own Mike Seymour has been able to visit Disney Research Zurich to find out more – and even be part of – the capture process.

In a posting on Wikihuman from the Digital Human League, of which Mike is a member, he discusses the scanning process which involved eye scans, facial scans in Disney Research’s Medusa Rig and a head scan via a portable rig. For the eye scanning, in particular, an array of DSLRs and LED lights are used.

The scans, which are part of data being acquired by the DHL, will form part of the League’s ongoing – and shared – research into digital humans.
Find out more in Mike’s Wikihuman post.
